A very belated Happy New Year 2011 to my Lights Camera Action Viewers! It has been overwhelming gathering information regarding Houston’s upcoming events. Come the New Year and so starts a host of sophisticated galas, launch parties, art shows, operas, and many fashion shows. A brief report of some upcoming Houston events:

Light up the night at Discovery Green Park, Downtown Houston as Red Bull Illume hosts the world’s premiere action and adventure sports photography contest and exhibition. International skateboarding sensation, Ryan Sheckler inaugurated the event on January 7, 2011 that showcases the hard work of action sports photographers all over the world. “These photographers brave every circumstance to capture an athlete in his or her finest moments, and without these pictures, who would know, who would believe?” said Ryan.

While thousands submitted photos, only 50 incredible images made the cut and are on display in Houston. The winners were chosen by a jury of renowned photography experts. A free event to be enjoyed by all ages. Jan 7-17, 2011, 6pm-10pm.

Sunday January 16, 2011 enjoy the Indian kite flying festival at George Bush Park along with Surya namaskar.

Next stop, Houston Press Presents Artopia on January 29, 2011 a great event for musical art performances, fashion show, dance performance, restaurant sampling on Winter Street Studios from 8pm-11pm. There is a free preview party on January 21, 2011 at NOX from 8pm to 11pm.

January 22nd join fabulous friends, inspiring art, for one important cause at the Art 4 Life Benefit. Join co-chairs Barbara Davis, Heidi Schwarzwald, MD and Bryan Rosenstrauch for the sixth annual Art4Life | Arts for AIDS.

Celebrate Art4Life | Arts for AIDS featuring 50 international and nationally acclaimed artists, curated by Barbara Davis to create an exceptional collection for this very special evening. January 26th India celebrates its Republic Day, the Flag Hoisting ceremony on India’s 62nd Republic Day will be held on Wednesday, 26 January, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Consul General’s Residence (5634, Briar Drive, Houston, TX-77056). Consul General Sanjiv Arora will read President of India’s message on this occasion. Refreshments will be served later.

Houston’s Indian American community will celebrate the occasion in grand honor by hosting India Fair 2011 at the New Stafford Center on January 29, 2011 for details check http://www.icchouston.org/.

Start off February, the beautiful Valentine month, with Opera 101. Each month, Opera Vista introduces us to a new facet of the world of opera. Presented by founder and artistic director Viswa Subbaraman, one can explore the many shades and variations that make opera such an intriguing art form. The much talked about gala is Houston Young People For the Arts, HYPA invites you to an evening of whimsical, magical and surreal proportions inspired by Houston Symphony’s upcoming performances of Ravel’s Spain with Bolero on Saturday, February 5, 2011 http://www.houstondowntownalliance.com/hypa/.

The same evening witness Houston Greeters gala event, Hats off to Houston ‘The Big Greet’ Benefitting Houston Greeters, the free service that shares our city’s best places and activities with others! The event is at Winterstreet Studios and highlights music by Don’t Worry ‘Bout It Blues Band, cuisine and brew, Artists Open Studios, Photo Exhibition of Danny Clark, and Art Car of Houston, and $100 raffle tickets for Original artwork by Sandi Seltzer Bryant. Another great reason to dress up! Paul Mitchell the School — Houston will be hosting a charity benefit hair show that will be featuring an “Avant Garde Couture” themed fashion show, on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 7pm to 9pm. Models provided by the students will be showcasing the work of the Future Professionals in the theme of their own artistic concepts and wardrobe through recycled items. There will be live entertainment by Studio 8, hors d’oeuvres, music by DJ Tito, media and coverage by Ruchi Mukherjee (yours truly) TV Asia/Lights Camera Action, local Houston artists, and more.

All charity event donations are going to Larry King Cardiac Foundation, Andrew Gomez foundation, Food for Africa, Children’s Miracle Network, and Leeza’s Place. Tickets to the event are available for pre-sale @ $10.00 so call 713-465-6300.
