The Merchants: Redefining Glamour With Purpose

The Merchants: Redefining Glamour With Purpose

I still remember meeting the gorgeous Sneha Merchant, walking into a holiday party in Houston back in 2011, wearing a statement Burberry London plaid coat. Together, Sneha and Naushir (Nick) Merchant have made such a lasting impact—juggling philanthropy, parenting, careers, and most importantly, doing it all with incredible style.

They’ve always amazed me as a couple. And anyone who knows them knows them as one of the most stylish duos in Houston, with a deep sense of commitment to Operation Smile. In a world where success is often measured by personal gain, Nick and Sneha Merchant stand out for how much they give back. As a dynamic pair balancing entrepreneurial ventures, artistic passions, and a steadfast dedication to philanthropy, they’ve built a life that is as inspiring as it is impressive.

Nick is a successful businessman who has built an impressive empire spanning real estate, retail, and hospitality. His entrepreneurial spirit fuels their shared mission, ensuring that their philanthropic endeavors are backed by unwavering strength and stability.

But let’s rewind a bit. Both Sneha and Naushir—fondly called Nick—were born and raised in Mumbai, India, in households where two worlds beautifully collided.

“My father was a disciplined, hardworking businessman, while my mother was a paradigm of compassion and service. I watched my mom dedicate her time to nonprofit work, particularly with the Aga Khan Foundation, which I’m proud to be a part of today,” shared Sneha. “Watching her balance family life with meaningful social impact left a profound mark on me.”

Nick also grew up in a family where entrepreneurship was second nature. His father was a businessman, and his mother, a devoted homemaker, was the heart of their household.

“My parents believed that success should never come from shortcuts, and that lesson has shaped the way I run our businesses today,” explained Nick. “Our culture instilled in us a deep sense of responsibility to our families, our businesses, and our community.”

From Sneha’s mother’s social work to Nick’s father’s business values, they both grew up understanding that success holds more meaning when it’s built on integrity and shared with others. That belief drives everything they do—whether it’s expanding their businesses or supporting causes like Operation Smile and UNICEF.

Ruchi: In what ways do you feel you bring your culture into the community through your work, service, and style?

Sneha & Nick: Our Indian culture is a vital part of who we are, and sharing it with our non-Indian friends is something we hold close to our hearts. It’s about staying true to our roots while embracing the world around us. We celebrate festivals like Diwali and Eid with our loved ones, involving our children in these traditions to keep them connected to their heritage. As members of the Ismaili Aga Khan community, we prioritize keeping our faith and values alive and passing them down to the next generation.

“From the food we cook to the language we speak at home, our culture is woven into our everyday lives. Beyond that, we’re passionate about supporting nonprofits that create lasting change in India,” shared Nick.

While I was eager to dive deeper into their Operation Smile journey, I had to pause for a moment to ask about their fashion. What a style icon! Sneha describes her look as a mix of edgy and classy comfort.

“I love pairing elegant silhouettes with bold accessories, reflecting who I am: strong, vibrant, and unapologetically me,” she says.
Nick prefers a timeless approach—tailored suits, classic cuts, clean lines.

“For me, style is about looking effortless yet powerful, whether I’m in business meetings or at a gala fundraiser.”

In my opinion, fashion isn’t just about clothes. It’s empowering. It’s a way to tell your story—your journey and your heritage.

Ruchi: How does fashion help you express yourself? Can you share a time when it made you feel more confident?

Sneha: Absolutely. Fashion empowers me to express myself without saying a word. It’s how I share my creativity, my culture, and my confidence. One memorable moment was being recognized as one of Houston’s Best Dressed for March of Dimes—an honor I’ve received not once, but twice. It’s more than a title; it’s recognition given to a select few who have made a meaningful impact through philanthropy and community service. As an Indian woman in a largely Caucasian crowd, being celebrated for who I am and where I come from was deeply moving. It speaks to Houston’s incredible spirit—a city that embraces diversity and lifts people up. For that, I’m endlessly grateful.

Nick: One standout moment for me was walking the runway for Una Notte in Italia, a fashion show benefiting the Houston Area Women’s Center to support families affected by domestic violence. Sharing that runway with my son made it even more meaningful—a moment I’ll cherish forever.

I also believe that looking your best doesn’t detract from being focused in business. It complements it. Confidence in your appearance fuels confidence in every area of life. I hope to inspire others to find that balance.

What truly sets this couple apart is their warmth—for family, friends, and community. Over delicious home-cooked biryani (an Indian rice dish made with aromatic spices and chicken), we dove deeper into their journey with Operation Smile. Although Sneha was busy being the perfect hostess, she enthusiastically shared:

“Our journey with Operation Smile began about 14 years ago, when my dear friend—and now co-chair—Viet Hoang, returned from the Operation Smile Los Angeles Gala. He was deeply moved by the life-changing work they were doing and passionately pitched the nonprofit to me. At the time, I had just given birth to my son, Zaryan.”

Operation Smile is a global nonprofit that provides cleft surgeries for children. The cause has taken them far beyond Houston’s glittering social scene and into communities where a single surgery can change a life forever. Together, they traveled to Guatemala on a mission trip, witnessing firsthand the life-transforming power of a smile. Sneha later joined her son on a mission to India, deepening their family’s connection to this cause.

Wearing a salwar kameez for an Eid celebration and preparing chai, Sneha continued, “When I became a new mother to a perfectly healthy baby, I couldn’t stop thinking about how another mother, somewhere, was facing a completely different reality—a child born with a cleft lip. It’s a condition that has nothing to do with a mother’s health or choices. It happens without reason, and many families simply can’t afford the surgery to fix it. That thought stuck with us. Nick and I knew we had to do something.”

Since then, Sneha and Nick have dedicated themselves to raising funds and awareness. Sneha has co-chaired the Operation Smile Houston Gala with Viet for the past eight years, raising more than $3.5 million in Houston alone.

It’s become even more meaningful now that their children are involved. Two years ago, Sneha traveled to Kerala, India, with Zaryan, who was 13 at the time.

“Last spring break, Zaryan had an unforgettable moment singing alongside Carmit Bachar, co-founder and singer of the Pussycat Dolls, performing ‘Die With a Smile’ at the Operation Smile Gala in Park City,” says Sneha.

As we wrapped up our delightful conversation, Sneha shared what she’s most excited about. Aside from her upcoming art exhibitions, the Merchants shared:

“Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee, the co-founders of Operation Smile, have embraced our family as their own. Their warmth, kindness, and unwavering belief in this mission continue to inspire us—and we’re not slowing down. We’re so excited about our 9th annual gala. Mark your calendars: September 27, 2025. Our goal is to keep expanding our efforts and changing more lives, one smile at a time.”

Ruchi: Last but not least, while you both appear to be the perfect couple, what are a few challenges you face, and how do you overcome them?

Sneha: Like any couple, Ruchi, we’re just balancing careers and family. We’ve faced our share of challenges—from time management to the pressures of running multiple businesses. The key for us has been open communication, mutual respect, and remembering that we’re stronger together. No matter how busy life gets, we make sure to prioritize our marriage and our family.

Nick: The key is knowing you’re on the same team. (Signs off with a smile.)

Together, Sneha and Naushir Merchant are not just building businesses or creating art. They’re shaping a legacy—of compassion, elegance, and hope—proving that true success isn’t just about what you achieve, but how much you give back to the world.
