In the heart of Houston’s philanthropic and cultural community, Tammie and Dr. Charles “Andy” Johnson have become synonymous with generosity, leadership, and love. Their story is not just about success, but about building a life rooted in partnership, service, and a shared commitment to leaving the world better than they found it.
Recently honored as a 2023 Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation Woman of Distinction, Tammie has dedicated her life to causes spanning childhood nutrition, cancer research, human trafficking prevention, and the arts. Andy, one of the Gulf Coast’s top ophthalmologists, has built a respected medical career defined by excellence and compassion, having performed hundreds of pro bono eye surgeries for children and seniors who otherwise could not access care.
Together, the Johnsons embody the rare blend of professional achievement and personal devotion – using their influence not for themselves, but to uplift others.
A Shared Journey
Married for more than 22 years, Tammie and Andy have raised three children: Brittney, Chase, and Carson – and today enjoy the joys of grandparenthood with four young granddaughters. Their marriage is defined by respect, teamwork, and unwavering support for each other’s passions.
Andy’s path began at Rice University where he received a Chemical Engineering degree and the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, leading to a career at the Texas Eye Institute, where he serves as managing partner. Over three decades, he has restored vision for tens of thousands, pioneering advancements in refractive surgery while maintaining a quiet commitment to those most in need.
Tammie, a graduate of the University of Houston (Magna Cum Laude) and Rice University’s Master of Liberal Studies program, pursued research that broke new ground on child sex trafficking in Houston. Her capstone study, published in the International Journal of Arts and Humanities, underscored her devotion to advocacy and her ability to pair rigorous scholarship with hands-on volunteer work at organizations like Freedom Place and Redeemed Ministries. Tammie was recognized by the Greater Houston Chamber of Commerce as a STEAM Role Model for her accomplishments. She was also recognized as Who’s Who in Houston by Pin Oak Charity.
Philanthropy at the Core
The Johnson’s impact on Houston’s nonprofit and cultural scene is far-reaching. Because Tammie’s greatest passion is to help others, she gives selflessly of her time, abilities and resources to many worthy causes some of which include KNOW Autism, March of Dimes, Pet Set, Crohn’s and Colitis, Recipe for Success, Crime Stoppers, The Women’s Home, Children at Risk, Deck My Room and many others.
They have been deeply committed to health and cancer research. Tammie has chaired several major events for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, serves on its ALSAC Advisory Board. Tammie has received the St. Jude Philanthropic honor, and she completed volunteer training at St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis. Tammie co-chaired the Cattle Baron’s Ball Auction for the American Cancer Society. Tammie also serves on the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Board Leadership Development Committee. Both Tammie and Andy have lent their time and leadership to cancer research in honor of family and friends.
Children and families have also been a priority. As an Advisory board member for Recipe for Success. Tammie has also chaired several successful events for Recipe for Success. Tammie has championed healthy eating initiatives in underserved schools and supported Hope Farms, which supplies fresh produce to Houston’s food desserts.
Music and the arts hold a special place in their lives. As active supporters of the Houston Symphony, the Johnsons have served as Symphony Ball co-chairs and are members of the Legacy Society Crescendo Circle, ensuring the Symphony’s future for generations to come. Tammie has also served on the Houston Symphony Board of Trustees and was on various committees including: Education, Auction, Ima Hogg, and Development.
Their philanthropic devotion has earned them recognition as one of Houston’s Top Ten Power Couples by LCA, along with numerous philanthropic honors that reflect not just generosity, but leadership in action. They have also been recognized as Most Charismatic and Philanthropic Couples by Dec My Room.
Service, Style, and Culture
When asked how she brings her culture into the community through service and style, Tammie reflects:
“I bring my culture into the community by blending philanthropy with style, allowing both to become extensions of who I am. My giving reflects the values I was raised with – compassion, dignity, and service– and supports causes deeply meaningful to me, including cancer research, children’s initiatives, animal welfare, the arts, and the fight against sex trafficking. Just as my philanthropy speaks to those values, so does my style. Fashion, for me, is not just about clothing; it is about storytelling, honoring tradition, and celebrating diversity with elegance. Whether through a gown that carries cultural symbolism or a modern look that sparks conversation, I see style as a powerful way to inspire connection and bring culture to life.”
Her appreciation for cultural celebration is one reason the couple is thrilled to be part of the Diwali Gala. “Being part of the Diwali Gala has given me an appreciation for how Indian culture celebrates community, beauty, and tradition,” Tammie says. “I would love to learn more about the deeper meaning behind the festival of Diwali itself – how light, renewal, and hope are expressed through rituals and traditions. I am also very interested in learning about Indian fashion and textiles, especially the symbolism behind colors, fabrics, and designs because they tell such powerful cultural stories. Since food is an important way people are brought together, I would like to understand more about Indian cuisine and hospitality. Most of all, I would love to hear personal stories from people about what Indian traditions mean to them because lived experiences are the heart of culture.”
Strength in Adversity
Like many families, the Johnsons faced challenges during the pandemic. Andy continued his critical medical work while Tammie shouldered the anxiety of having her husband on the frontlines. Instead of fracturing their bond, the experience deepened their gratitude for each other. “That time reminded us of what matters most—faith, health, and family,” Tammie reflects.
Life Beyond Service
Philanthropy may define much of their public life, but the Johnsons also embrace joy in the everyday. They cherish time with their children and grandchildren, celebrating milestones, traveling together, and savoring the gift of family.
Travel is one of their greatest shared passions. Over the years, they have explored more than 25 countries, each journey strengthening their bond and boadening their worldview. From historic cities to quiet beaches, they’ve gathered inspiration for their lives—and, for Tammie, often her sense of style. Known for her refined yet bold fashion, she views clothing as a way to tell stories about her global adventures.
A Legacy of Love and Leadership
For Tammie and Andy Johnson, success has never been measured by titles or accolades, but by the lives touched along the way. They have raised a family grounded in compassion, led by example in their professions, and given generously to the city they love.
“We see ourselves as partners in every sense—in family, in purpose, and in service,” Andy says. “Philanthropy gives our lives direction, but family gives us joy.”
As Houston honors their contributions, the Johnsons remain focused on what matters most: faith, love, and service. Their story is not only one of achievement, but of enduring partnership—a reminder that when two people walk through life with shared values, the impact can ripple far beyond themselves.
At its heart, the Johnsons’ journey is a love story—between husband and wife, between parents and children, and between two people and the community they’ve uplifted together.
