Runsi Sen, dedicated the First Annual Ovarcome Gala to the memory of her mother Atashi Das, who died of ovarian cancer in 2009 in Kolkata, India. Ovarcome celebrated its inaugural gala ‘Ovar The Scrubs’ honoring physicians on May 24th at the Houston City Club, in support and recognition of ovarian cancer. The mission was to raise global awareness, to fund research in search of cures, and to provide financial support to underprivileged women in the U.S. as well as developing nations in their valiant fight against ovarian cancer. Houston for the first time hosted a gala dedicated to a vital cause: ovarian cancer.
The fundraiser honored Dr. Anil K. Sood, MD Anderson Cancer Center for his outstanding contributions in the field of ovarian cancer research. The numbers relating to ovarian cancer are staggering. “Ovarian cancer affects over 250,000 women worldwide on an annual basis.
In the U.S. over 22,000 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year and over 14,000 lost their lives,” reported Dr. Sood.
With about a 200 plus diverse group of guests and KTRK Channel 13’s Sonia Azad and Lisa Slater as emcees, the evening was entertaining and very inspiring, with the motive to celebrate the new and increase survival rate.
