The Banyan Brunch to Welcome Legendary Indian Cinema Actress Vyjayanthimala Bali
It was truly a festive way to kick off the festival of lights ‘Diwali’ celebration with hip ladies of Htown over a brunch treat at the Bhatiha Residence with none other than the legendary Indian Cinema actress Vyjayanthimala Bali. Fifty close friends of Houston based philanthropist and fashionista Latika Samtani Bathija had a hearty dose of tasty treats, entertainment and picture opportunities with the actress.
Taking off from their daily routine the ladies had a gala time dolled up in their Kanjeevaram best sharing exercise regimes, fashion gossip and most importantly supporting a noble cause. The main purpose of hosting the afternoon soiree was to take advantage of Dr. Bali’s visit to Houston and host an event to support The Banyan: a charitable organization based out of Chennai, that reaches out to help the most marginalized section of society, namely women who are homeless, and mentally challenged. A woman without a roof over her head, is a scary thought, but to be mentally challenged, leaves a stigma that most Indian families sadly, either try to cover up, or avoid. The Banyan has since 1993, reached out to these very women, and helped rehabilitate them into being able to be self sufficient and even put some of them back to work or able to mingle with society and family.
Guests enjoyed several rounds of champagne but the main center of attraction was Vyjayanthimala who was constantly surrounded by admirers eager to know more about her personal and professional life. The celebrity was accompanied by her Houstonian best friend Deepi Mehta who gave a special introduction about the accomplishments of the actress. Deepi was also thrilled to announce that Dr. Bali was in Houston to attend the wedding ceremony of their son. During a tête-à-tête with the actress she informed that her favorite actress is Madhuri Dixit and she had a a great time being a co-star with Dilip Kumar. She also stressed upon the value of true friendship such as her’s and Deepi. “I believe in a previous life and feel blessed to be surrounded by such good friends as they are a very important support in your life,” added Dr. Bali.
It was heartwarming to see an actress with much fame, now 76 years old be so humble and generous, who patiently answered all the questions asked by the guests. “I just could not keep my eyes off her,” says Latika, “even at this age she is so graceful, stylish and articulate. I am so appreciative that she accepted to be at my home and support The Banyan,” she adds.
Over all the hostess was thrilled with the turnout and happy that her girlfriends support her cause. Spotted looking gorgeous: Asha Dhume, Gayathri Rao, Seema Sanghi, Shanthi Rubin, Asha Reddi, Sippi Singh, Savita Rao, Mira Bhardwaj, Aparna Rao, Anjali Draksharam, and others.
