Community Celebrates Hinduism, Youth and Indian Culture
A Report
Hindus of Greater Houston (HGH) presented their Annual Hindu Youth Awards and Gala Night mid June at the India House to celebrate the achievements of the community Hindu youth. The objectives of the Hindus of Greater Houston is to promote Hindu values and adhere to Hindu ways of life through festivals nurturing a strong unity and brotherhood within the Hindu community.
Over the years Houston has grown culturally and now for the first time, a Hindu prayer was chosen to begin a session of the Houston City Council at City Hall on June 1, 2011. This was a “history making moment” for the Hindu community in Houston. The Hindu Youth Awards event was hosted to foster and promote Hindu values. The highlights of the evening included a presentation of Hindu Youth Achievers Awards, inspiring stories narrated by the youth, and a grand cultural performance followed by a sumptuous dinner.
Thara Narasimhan, the secretary of HGH is also a great source of inspiration for many of the youths present at the occasion. “Being brought up in two cultures, it is indeed a challenge for the Hindu Youth to keep up with their culture and tradition along with their upbringing in Western society,” explains Thara.
At the evening eleven youths were given awards for their excellence in community and religious services.
