Spirit of the Season | Junior League of Houston Closes Out 2020 by Giving Back
The Junior League of Houston continues to shine as an exceptional asset to the Houston community with their second Junior League of Houston “SUPER” Market event in December. The city’s massive social and economic setbacks brought on by Covid-19 prove to be no match for the resilient and servant-hearted women of this historic organization. December’s event served clients from many of the League’s partner agencies: B.E.A.R, Child Advocates, DePelchin Children’s Center, Mission of Yahweh, Nehemiah Center, Neighbors in Action, Operation Homefront and Star of Hope. The purpose of the colorful event was to provide these cherished families with delicious, healthy meals and warm clothes for the holidays.
The League’s gorgeous Briar Oaks Lane residence opened its gates to over 185 families in need. The driveway and parking garage both served as pick-up stations for each of the unique items provided, including food, clothing and holiday presents for children. In total, the League was able to provide meals for almost 1,000 people and provided basic needs items to almost 450 children.
In true Junior League fashion, outdoor decorations abounded and helped share holiday spirit. Dulce Décor, Dreamland Entertainment and Katy’s Parties worked together to provide a glittering, Frozen-inspired experience for the whole family. Upon arrival, families received a warm, tasty, family-style breakfast to-go, and cozy winter coats, provided by Attack Poverty and The Junior League. Over 400 children participated in the festive event, and as a special treat, each child received holiday craft kits, pajamas, books, and a toy from their wishlist. Infant donations included over 1,000 diapers and over 60 blankets.
The last donation, a beautiful family-sized holiday meal, was prepared by the famous Junior League of Houston kitchen. The meal’s food items were donated by Ben E. Keith, a long-time food supplier of the League. To top off dinner, locally-owned Rugid Grind gifted families with freshly ground coffee.
With the success of the past two “SUPER” Markets comes a demand for yet another! The Junior League of Houston will be hosting a Spring Community “SUPER” Market, the date has yet to be determined.
