Exotic Skin Accessories
Rachel’s Style Corner
During an event this summer, I had the pleasure of meeting Gabriella Aliberti of Mon Venin, importer of exotic skin handbags and accessories. I was excited to learn that the designer of their main collection is Haydee Callejas, who hails from Nicaragua. I have had the pleasure of traveling there twice with my husband who is also Nicaraguan. As a personal stylist and shopper, I always keep an eye out for THE UNIQUE accessory, and Mon Venin’s accessories are truly unique, just like the country where they are made.
Wanting to know more, I met co-owner Nadia Palacios Lauterbach, at Mon Venin’s trunk show, where I was able to get a good look at the textures and colors firsthand. These handbags and clutches are adorable and very chic, a great addition to any woman’s collection. They are made of a variety of materials including alligator, python, and boa skin, and are all lined with suede. The designer, Haydee Callejas, uses different species of reptiles, and believes that “the older the alligator, the more beautiful the skin”. Haydee works with the finest Nicaraguan artisans and it shows in the quality of her bags. I loved the ranges of colors, sizes and styles they had to offer, but my favorites were the envelope and studio clutches.
Mon Venin was founded in 2011 by Gabriella and Nadia, who come from different backgrounds, but share a common love for fashion. Besides Haydee’s work, they promote local area designers and support such charities as Houston Area Women’s Center and Pink Door. Nadia says she enjoys showcasing her culture in a favorable light and strives to promote the skills and craftsmanship of the people of Nicaragua.
