The VIDA Experience

Living in Houston we are often bombarded by our out of town guests demanding for the best Tex-Mex restaurant. While the constant craving for good Mexican food is high some of us don’t want to give up on the sophistication. Therefore I was happy to be introduced to Vida: the restaurant that has the perfect blend of great Tex-Mex food without the hustle and bustle. Tucked in the River Oaks neighborhood off San Felipe, Vida’s cocoon-like setting offers complete privacy from the bustle of San Felipe and shifts effortlessly from a calm and quiet business lunch to a sexy date night refuge.

According to co-owners and brothers Trey and Cody Melcher, “The typical Tex-Mex restaurant in Houston offers a somewhat rushed, loud and even chaotic experience for patrons. Vida’s goal is to be the antithesis of that. We want to offer diners an escape, where they can relax and linger.”

While the ambiance is quite mesmerizing the food is equally mouth-watering. While munching on my first course smooth guacamole dip I found myself admiring the main dining room that showcases the works by Mexican painter Lolei Pavao, including several tasteful and eye-catching nudes. The main attraction is an elevated dining and lounge space, coined ‘the ring’, with wrap around banquette and contemporary graffiti art by Frederico Archuleta, an Austin-based artist who’s art work is referred to as ‘Tex-Mex-Sexy’, perfect fit for Vida.

The drinks were my absolute favorite, not only did they look as pretty as spring they were very refreshing. After a blissful glass of naked margarita, the roasted beet layered salad which is a collision of beets and goat cheese in a citrus tarragon dressing with baby greens was divine. Further we tried the magic stack enchiladas, layered with chicken, tortillas, and cheese baked with tomatillo sauce was a Vida specialty. My main entre Grilled Red Snapper Filet rubbed with citrus adobe and sliced mango in a lime butter, tequila shallot reduction is most certainly my recommendation.
